Spectramed Medical Aid

Spectramed Medical Aid

Spectramed offers five distinct plans, all designed to address specific health cover needs:

  1. The Spectra Cobalt Plan is a comprehensive option that covers both in- and out-of-hospital medical expenses. The hospitalization portion of the plan makes provision for unlimited treatment on an overall basis but there is an annual limit. The scheme requires members to obtain prior authorization for hospitalization. There is also provision for advanced oncology treatment and a host of other major procedures and treatment programs. In many cases members are also required to obtain approval before agreeing to treatment plans. Naturally, all the conditions of the Prescribed Minimum Benefit list are covered but additional provision is made for HIV/AIDs treatment and management. Health cover includes chronic medication, but only as long as the member is registered for the Chronic Disease List.
  2. The Spectra Azure Plan is an affordable plan aimed at younger families and fit, healthy individuals. It provides for dentistry treatments, unlimited in-hospital care, and a variety of day-to-day medical expenses. This plan also contains the Benefit Booster that offers members many additional benefits that include: Screening for a variety of conditions and diseases; Specialized dentistry, which includes dental implants and advanced dental surgery; Full treatment for many psychiatric conditions; Treatment programs for alcohol and drug abuse problems; Tests for blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose levels.
  3. The Spectra Aqua Plan is an uncomplicated hospital plan. People who cannot afford comprehensive cover will find it attractive as will those that do not feel that they need such cover yet because they live active, healthy lifestyles and they have no problems with disease in their family histories. Nobody can plan for emergencies, however, and this plan provides peace of mind in such instances. All instances of hospitalization are covered in terms of this plan but members are nevertheless required to obtain permission from their medical aid schemes prior to admittance to hospital. It is also required from members to make use of approved treatment facilities and service providers only. If they neglect to follow this rule, they may be held liable for a portion of the bill.
  4. The Spectra Cyan Plan goes a step further from being just a hospital plan because it also includes certain day-to-day medical treatment options. There is also a medical savings plan that can help members to pay for unexpected out-of-hospital medical expenses. Unlike some other schemes, Spectramed medical aid carries unused funds over into the next financial year and if a member should terminate his or her relationship with the scheme, unused funds are recompensed.
  5. The Spectra Capri Plan is an uncomplicated plan that makes specific provision for both in- and out-of-hospital medical expenses for those people that are not likely to become ill and that do not suffer from chronic diseases.

As with most other medical schemes, Spectramed medical aid imposes a waiting period of up to three months and cover may be denied if applicants failed to declare a pre-existing condition. © Medical Aid Plan
