A Discovery Health Hospital Plan lets you have private hospital care at the level you need.

Hospital plans are for hospital costs. This means you have the health care you need when you need it and you don’t have to rely on the public systems, which is over-stretched, meaning you might not be able to get the help you need, or wait a long time before you get it.

People often think not having health cover saves money, but health should be your priority as it is your most important asset and it is worth giving up luxuries to make sure you have it. It’s important to know what plans are on offer. Plans that look as if they offer a lot can be deceptive, for example.

• Some hospital plans offer health care outside of the hospital, but this will mean an increase in the plan price or decrease hospital cover.
• If you do have to go to the hospital and have a non-Discovery plan, your plan may only cover the medical aid rate, and you will be left to pay costs that are often four times as much as the medical rate.
• Some plans will not pay for the hospital treatment of pre-existing conditions.
• Many plans will not pay for treatment of certain conditions within the first twelve months.
• Emergency medical transport is included in some plans, but not others.
• Many plans will only pay the cost of treatment if the member makes use of a pre-approved network of service providers, so you have little or no choice about the hospital or the medical specialist you can use.

There are many hospital arrangements in the different Discovery Health Hospital Plans.

If you choose a Core hospital plan, you will use the KeyCare Network, which is made up of hospitals and other medical service providers that provide care and treatment at fixed costs.

• Core plans cover all hospital costs (surgery, treatments, the cost of specialists and medication).
• Most Core plans pay for up to ninety days in the hospital, or up to five million rand for each member if there is an emergency while traveling outside South Africa (this includes dependents).
• Core plans cover specific investigations such as colonoscopies, X-rays, and gastroscopies. In some cases, however, you will have to pay part of the bill.

There are different conditions for different Discovery hospital plans.

• If you have a Classic Core or Essential Core plan, you can choose any private hospital for treatment, but if you have a Delta plan, you will have to use the Delta Network.
• If you are on the Coastal Core program, you must use an approved hospital in one of the four coastal provinces. You will have to pay about thirty percent of the final bill yourself if you don’t use one of the approved hospitals.
