Key Health Medical Scheme

The Key Health Medical Scheme was originally found to provide medical aid to local government employees. In came about in 2007 when two schemes merged: Global Health and Munimed Medical Scheme. Today it is an open scheme with more than eighty five thousand members. It boasts that it is one of the most affordable medical schemes in South Africa.

What does Keyhealth offer?

The scheme offers five plans that include various degrees of cover for hospitalization and day-to-day medical expenses:

1.  The Essence Plan This plan is affordable with a monthly premium of just under a thousand rand for the principal member. It may be ideal for young people that just started earning and that are healthy enough to get by with very basic cover and hospital benefits. Members may be required to use specified hospitals and medical practitioners. If they fail to do so they may be liable for the additional cost.

2.  The Equilibrium Plan This is the ideal plan for small families. It offers basic cover for everyday medical expenses, treatment and medication for some chronic diseases and some hospital cover. Monthly premiums start at just over a thousand rand per month for the principal member and approximately four hundred rand for children. In cases of hospitalization it is sometimes necessary to obtain prior authorization from the scheme.

3.  The Silver Plan.The cover offered by this plan is very similar to the Equilibrium plan but it includes much better hospital cover. Premiums start at just over two thousand rand per month for the main member and four hundred rand for children.

4.  The Gold and Platinum Plans These are the flagships of Key Health. Membership of the Gold plan start at two thousand eight hundred rand and the Platinum plan begins at just over four and a half thousand rand. These plans offer comprehensive cover that will take care of both in-hospital and out-of-hospital medical expenses. Members of other plans in the range are able to upgrade to these plans as their budgets increase and as their medical needs grow.

Other benefits offered by the Key Health Medical Scheme

•               All members of Key Medical Aid have the option to join the Health Booster program. This is a wellness program that places the emphasis on preventive medical care. Early diagnosis of potentially fatal diseases often save lives and it is often much cheaper to prevent disease than to treat it. This program also offers members additional benefits such as cheaper gymnasium memberships and even cheaper flights.
•              Key Health members have full access to the OneCare Specialist Network. This allows members to use the internet to find out which doctors and specialists are part of the scheme’s pre-approved network. Using practitioners that are part of the network save members money and expedite claims.
•             The Key Health scheme also offer members extensive online information services, webmail and SMS notification services.
