• Exclusions: Some medical aid plans have exclusions on certain pre-existing conditions; these conditions can last as long as a year.

• Deposits: Certain medical aids acquire that you pay a certain percentage for a deposit for procedures and medication.

• Benefits: Should you have any existing medical conditions, ensure that the plan you purchase have enough benefits to cover the needs of those and possible new conditions. Some benefits you should really have a look at are; therapy, optometry, radiology, dentistry and oncology. We sometimes tend to focus on the bigger picture and miss the smaller details, which let us end up with expensive medical bills because the benefits plan of the scheme just did not cover the basics needed.
• The rules: All the medical aids available, have set of rules you will have to abide by; be it claims, specific doctors you should visit, certain documentation needed, authorization for certain procedures etc. Make sure you find a fund with rules you are comfortable complying to.
