Hosmed Medical Aid

South Africans are fortunate to be able to choose between many truly excellent medical aids. The laws governing these schemes are also to the advantage of members of such schemes, including the Hosmed.

Hosmed Medical AidMedical aid health cover is very expensive and most South Africans simply cannot rely upon the public health system to provide the type of medical care that they need and want. The cost makes the choice of a specific plan an important issue and it is necessary to consider a wide variety of factors before joining a specific scheme and selecting a particular plan.

Who is Hosmed Medical Aid?

This company was originally registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act. The original purpose of registering yet another medical scheme was to make provision for the unique needs of government employees that worked on the local and provincial levels. At that stage the Gems Medical Aid Scheme did not make provision for such employees although it now does.

Hosmed medical aid is now an open scheme, meaning that any South African is free to join if they wish. With thirty-four thousand members Hosmed has shown excellent growth and every indication is that they will remain a force to be reckoned with. The scheme offers three major options:

  1. The Hosmed Step Option is the most affordable plan on offer from Hosmed. Members are offered treatment at all major state hospitals and other state medical facilities. Members cover identification cards that must be presented every time treatment is sought. Cover includes provision for the treatment of all chronic conditions, all the diseases that are part of the Prescribed Minimum Benefit list and also HIV and AIDS treatment and management. In certain cases members are required to register their conditions, as is the case with HIV and AIDS. All members are also required to register with Netcare before they can expect air or road ambulance services. It is important to note that this plan does not make provision for mental health treatments, day-to-day medication or remedial therapies and treatments.
  2. The Hosmed Value Option offers all the benefits that for part of the Step Option but it also provides members with cover for the cost of over-the-counter medicines. This cover is limited, however, to five hundred and thirty rand per family each year and to one hundred and twenty-seven rand per prescription. Other benefits that are part of this plan include free sterilization, mental health treatment, limited remedial therapies and basic dentistry.
  3. The Hosmed Plus Option is the most comprehensive plan in the Hosmed medical aid stable. It includes all the benefits of the other two plans, but the limits placed on the cost of treatments, procedures and medicines are more generous.

Health insurance is certainly expensive and many people simply cannot afford comprehensive medical aid cover. The plans offered by Hosmed medical aid aim to provide such people with a viable and affordable alternative. One of the biggest criticisms against the scheme is the fact that it requires members to make use of state facilities only. Some people argue that such facilities are available free of charge to all South Africans, regardless of whether they are members of any private scheme. © Medical Aid Plan
